Jack E. Alderman (No. 2)
EDM number 2130 in 2006-07, proposed by Mark Oaten on 16/10/2007.
That this House notes the case of Jack E. Alderman, whose execution date has been set by the State of Georgia for Friday 19th October at 1900 hours; expresses concern that he has been on death row for 32 years; recognises that in 1993 the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council found that to keep a man facing execution over an extended period of time constituted an inhuman act; further notes that a number of states have halted executions pending the Supreme Court's consideration of whether lethal injections contradict the Eighth Amendment; urges the Governor of Georgia to intervene in Mr Alderman's case and suspend his execution pending the ruling of the Supreme Court; and applauds the work of the website Exonerate Jack in raising awareness of this case.
