Public Expenditure On Flood Protection And Invading Iraq
EDM number 2024 in 2006-07, proposed by Dai Davies on 25/07/2007.
That this House notes that the written reply by the Secretary of State for Defence to the hon. Member for Fareham, Official Report, 17th July, column 200W, sets out that the total estimated figures the for annual net additional costs of military operations in Iraq, included in Spring Supplementary Estimates for the years 2002-03 to 2006-07 were in 2002-03, £1,000 million, in 2003-04, £1,539 million, in 2004-05, £975 million, in 2005-06, £1,098 million and in 2006-07, £1,002 million, contrasts this with the £600 million annual current expenditure on flood defences, to be increased to £800 million in 2010-11, as announced by the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in his oral statement to the House of 2nd July, Official Report, column 689; believes that these expenditures demonstrate misplaced priorities in public expenditure; and calls on the Government to bring back British forces from Iraq, so that future expenditure can be dedicated to defending British people against real threats, such as floods, rather than exacerbating security problems, such as in Iraq.
