Peacekeeping In Darfur
EDM number 1970 in 2006-07, proposed by David Drew on 23/07/2007.
That this House deplores the continued conflict and worsening humanitarian situation in Darfur, Chad and the Central African Republic; notes with concern that the proposed AU-UN hybrid force for Darfur is unlikely to be in place before 2008; recognises that unless donors fulfil pledges and give more to sustain the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) it risks collapse during the interim period; welcomes the UK and the Netherlands' strong bilateral financial support for AMIS; urges the Government to continue to support AMIS until the proposed hybrid force is in place; further calls on the Government to continue to press those donors whose bilateral contributions have been low to give more, in particular the Arab League, which has only contributed some $20 million of a pledged $150 million; further recognises that the need for deployment of the proposed AU-UN hybrid force is as urgent as ever; calls on the international community to maintain concerted pressure on the government of Sudan to abide by its agreement to accept the hybrid force; and therefore calls on the international community to commit financial and logistical support and troops to the hybrid force as quickly as possible and to expedite the protection of civilians in Darfur.
