Medical Technologies

EDM number 1918 in 2006-07, proposed by Ian Gibson on 16/07/2007.

That this House congratulates the Medical Technology Group on its annual parliamentary showcase which aims to raise awareness of patient access to the latest advances in medical technology; supports the Medical Technology Group in its aims to increase the take-up of medical technology in the NHS; agrees that innovative medical devices not only improve patient outcomes but reduce bed days, waiting times and the likelihood of patient re-admittance to hospital, therefore saving money and improving efficiency in the NHS in the long term; acknowledges the importance of small and medium sized enterprises in pushing forward innovation in the UK medical device industry; expresses concern that the NHS spends just 4.8 per cent. of its £80 billion budget on medical technologies; and further agrees that the take-up of medical devices ought to be prioritised through NHS procurement and purchasing mechanisms.
