Global Moratorium On The Death Penalty (No. 2)

That this House wholeheartedly supports the British Government's principled opposition to the use of the death penalty in all circumstances; commends the motion by Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi and Italian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Massimo D'Alema, calling for a moratorium on the death penalty at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels in January; notes the role of the German government in taking the issue forward during its presidency of the EU; welcomes the decision of the EU to adopt a decision to table a resolution against the death penalty at the 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly; calls upon the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs to reinforce the United Kingdom's opposition to the death penalty in all future meetings that he has with the foreign ministers of other European and non-European states; and calls upon the Government to support the campaign for a global moratorium.
