Freedom Of Assembly In Eastern Europe
EDM number 1773 in 2006-07, proposed by Diane Abbott on 26/06/2007.
That this House notes with disgust the violent reaction to Gay Pride events that have been taking place in eastern Europe over the past weeks; further notes that in some countries Gay Pride events are banned; recognises that the banning of such events contravenes the European Convention on Human Rights, which gives the right to free speech and to freedom of assembly; further notes that, during peaceful protests in Latvia, Romania and Poland, protestors have been subject to physical attacks, had eggs, stones and bottles thrown at them and received death threats from groups of homophobic demonstrators, against which the police have given little or no protection; and calls on the Government to take action to deal with the homophobia which is becoming rife within some eastern European countries and their parliaments.
This motion has been signed by a total of 42 MPs.
