Angola
EDM number 1657 in 2006-07, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 11/06/2007.
That this House welcomes the continuation of the Department for International Development's programme in Angola; notes that this programme though small, with a budget of £3 million, has been effective in supporting Angola in areas of peace consolidation and poverty reduction; recognises that despite Angola's considerable oil wealth, its development indicators remain woefully poor, with the second worst rate of under-five mortality in the world and an average life expectancy of 41 years; acknowledges that post-conflict environments are fragile and face a high risk of returning to conflict; recognises that Angola is of strategic importance not only because of its oil reserves, but also because of its role as a regional power with influence that extends to Zimbabwe, South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo; and calls therefore for deeper and more sustained engagement by the British Government in Angola.
This motion has been signed by a total of 41 MPs.
