Climate Change And The Airline Industry
EDM number 1650 in 2006-07, proposed by Dai Davies on 07/06/2007.
That this House congratulates Leo van Wijk, vice-chairman of Air France-KLM for his commendable honesty in telling the Annual General Meeting of the International Air Transport Association in Vancouver on International Environment Day, 5th June, that the airline industry has passed up an opportunity to take the initiative in the green debate eight year's ago; agrees with his conclusion that now it will pay the price; further notes Mr van Wijk's observation that `because we have let six or seven years go by without taking the issue (of climate change) seriously, I think that until five or 10 years down the road we will be on the defensive'; and calls upon the senior management of British Airways, RyanAir, EasyJet and other UK-based airlines to start taking the threat of climate change seriously, immediately to implement policies to address the impact of the airline industry and the environment, and to take sustainability seriously.
