40th Anniversary Of The Occupation Of The Occupied Palestinian Territories
EDM number 1619 in 2006-07, proposed by Diane Abbott on 05/06/2007.
That this House notes that 6th June will mark the 40 years since Israel occupied the West Bank, Gaza and Jerusalem; further notes with concern the primitive austerity and deteriorating social infrastructure in which the Palestinians are now forced to live; recognises the numerous times Israel has contravened international law and notes its systematic violation of fundamental human rights set by the Geneva Convention; calls upon the UK Government to press the National Unity Government of Palestine to do its utmost to prevent the launching of Qassam rockets into Israel whilst commending the Israeli disengagement from Gaza in 2005; further calls upon the UK Government to press Israel to dismantle all illegal settlements in the West Bank in accordance with UN Resolution 446 and recognise that this is a significant obstacle to peace in the region; further calls upon Israel to confine its territorial expansions to the Green Line of 1967; further calls upon the Government to press Israel to dismantle the Security Wall in areas where it breaches this line; calls upon Israel to address the Palestinian refugee issue and the Palestinians' fundamental right to return; further notes that Israel's failure to deal with this problem has destabilised peace in the surrounding region; and calls upon the UK Government to find a feasible solution to the conflict based on UN resolutions and international law.
