Civilian Fatalities In The Gaza Strip
EDM number 1617 in 2006-07, proposed by Diane Abbott on 05/06/2007.
That this House notes with concern, and in light of the 40th anniversary of the Israeli occupation of Palestine, the Amnesty International 2007 report on the state of human rights in Israel and the Occupied Territories; further notes that the report states that the ratio of Palestinians to Israelis killed has soared from 4:1 in the first five years of the Intifada, to 30:1 in 2006 and to a massive 67:1 since 17th March, when the National Unity Government was formed; recognises that the arbitrary killing of any person, in particular civilians, regardless of their religion, nationality or political affiliation is deplorable; but recognises with great concern that the killing of 37 Palestinians, including 18 civilians and eight children, in the Gaza Strip since 16th May 2007 alone, compared to the killing of one Israeli in the same time period, clearly indicates, as Dr Mustafa Barghouthi corroborates, that it is Israeli military violence that is `fuelling this cycle of death'; and calls upon the UK Government to support the National Unity Government in order to bring a degree of much-needed stability to the region.
