Hms Sheffield

EDM number 1580 in 2006-07, proposed by Nick Clegg on 24/05/2007.

That this House expresses disappointment that the Royal Navy has chosen to offer HMS Sheffield affiliation with the new Type 45 Destroyer HMS Diamond rather than rename the ship after the city, and recognises the precedent of 1988 when HMS Bruiser was renamed HMS Sheffield in honour of the ship hit by a missile during the Falklands War; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Defence and the Admiralty to reconsider this decision and offer due recognition to Sheffield's proud history of naval links and the continuing desire of the city's people to be associated with the ship in this way.

This motion has been signed by a total of 19 MPs.
