Ms Malalai Joya
EDM number 1576 in 2006-07, proposed by John Barrett on 24/05/2007.
That this House recognises the brave plight of Ms Malalai Joya, Afghanistan's most outspoken Member of Parliament, in support of women's rights, democracy and universal justice; supports her invaluable work on these issues and commends her on her bravery and determination in the face of death threats and assassination attempts; condemns the decision of her fellow parliamentarians to suspend her from government for the remainder of her five year term; believes that this raises great concerns over the future of women's rights and equalities in Afghanistan following the murders of several outspoken female activists including Safia Amajan; and urges the UK Government to support Ms Joya in her work and to keep women's rights in Afghanistan high on the agenda in UK politics.
