Royal National Institute For The Deaf Subtitling Dvds Campaign
EDM number 1544 in 2006-07, proposed by Jeremy Hunt on 22/05/2007.
That this House notes Ofcom's research in 2006 revealing the importance of television subtitling with an estimated 7.6 million UK adults shown to have used television subtitles and over a million people stating they used them for all their television viewing; is concerned however that most national newspapers are regularly running promotional campaigns which provide free DVDs to readers that contain no subtitles and are therefore completely inaccessible to deaf and hard of hearing people who rely on subtitles as well as the many other people who find benefit from their use; and therefore joins the Royal National Institute for the Deaf and other deafness charities in urging all newspapers to ensure that DVDs that are given away are fully subtitled.
