Imprisonment Of Human Rights Defenders In Vietnam
EDM number 1537 in 2006-07, proposed by David Drew on 22/05/2007.
That this House notes with concern the current crackdown on human rights defenders and pro-democracy activists in Vietnam; notes specifically the recent sentencing of lawyers Nguyen-Van Dai and Le Thi Cong Nhan, medical doctor Le Nguyen Sang, journalist Huynh Nguyen Dao, lawyer Nguyen Bac Truyen and Catholic Father Nguyen Van Ly under Article 88 of Vietnam's penal code; highlights that these arrests have all taken place since Vietnam's hosting of the APEC Summit in November 2006 and her ascendance to the World Trade Organisation; regrets the severe shortcomings in due legal process, including the consistent denial of access to a lawyer for Nguyen Van Dai and Le Thi Cong Nhan, in contravention of Vietnamese law; and calls on the UK Government to make representations to the Vietnamese authorities to urge the immediate and unconditional release of these prisoners of conscience.
