100th Voyage Of The Royal Mail Ship St Helena
EDM number 1526 in 2006-07, proposed by Bob Russell on 21/05/2007.
That this House pays tribute to the captain and crew of the Royal Mail Ship St Helena on its 100th voyage, which commenced on St Helena Day, 21st May 2007, the 505th anniversary of the discovery of the Island of St Helena; notes that this year is the 25th Anniversary of the Falklands War, which involved the former RMS St Helena contributing to the successful liberation of the Falkland Islands; pays tribute to the courage, commitment and loyalty shown by the crew; regrets, however, that none of the crew received the South Atlantic Medal because they did not meet the arbitrary number of days of service within the exclusion zone which it was deemed was required to qualify for the medal; and calls on the Government to put right this slight on the volunteers on the RMS St Helena, who offered their assistance to citizens of another South Atlantic island who had been invaded, and to award them the South Atlantic Medal as a belated mark of both recognition and appreciation.
