Roads Policing Officers
EDM number 1525 in 2006-07, proposed by Bob Russell on 21/05/2007.
That this House acknowledges the dedication of roads policing officers, who work under difficult circumstances to prevent drivers from taking life-threatening risks and who investigate the horrific aftermath of road death and injury; deplores the under-resourcing of essential routine roads policing duties and investigation of law-breaking resulting in death and serious injury; urges the Government to take immediate action by setting roads policing as a sixth National Policing Priority; calls for legislation enabling roads policing officers to perform random and blanket roadside checks on driver impairment and vehicle roadworthiness to provide an effective deterrent to drivers who currently think they can get away with taking unacceptable risks on the road; and demands significant investment in roads policing, including numbers of officers, levels of routine safety checks and available technology, to help prevent the annual carnage of 3,336 deaths and 30,027 serious injuries on UK roads.
