LANCASHIRE TELEGRAPH'S WASTED LIVES CAMPAIGN

EDM number 1492 in 2006-07, proposed by Greg Pope on 16/05/2007.

That this House notes with grave concern the fact that 22 young drivers were killed on Lancashire's roads in 2006 and that a further 254 young people were seriously injured; believes that each one of these deaths is a tragedy which ruins the lives of bereaved relatives and friends; further believes that more should be done to promote safe driving, especially among young and newly qualified drivers; welcomes the Lancashire Telegraph's Wasted Lives Campaign, which is supported by over 1,000 Lancashire people; further notes that the campaign calls for an educational safe driving DVD to be given to all 15 year olds in East Lancashire, a graduated driving licence scheme which would restrict people under the age of 25 years from motorway driving until they have taken motorway driving lessons, the displaying of P plates on a driver's car for the first two years after that person has passed the driving test, an automatic ban on driving if a newly qualified driver is caught speeding more than 10 mph more than the speed limit, a restriction on drivers under the age of 25 carrying more than one passenger under the age of 25 and an advanced driving test to be taken before a person under the age of 25 years can drive a car with an engine capacity greater than 1100 cc; and calls on the Government to look closely at the Lancashire Telegraph's proposals, which have widespread support, with a view to implementing them.

This motion has been signed by a total of 15 MPs.
