Relations With Iran
EDM number 1398 in 2006-07, proposed by David Drew on 01/05/2007.
That this House, while opposing military action against Iran, condemns in the strongest manner the premeditated seizure of 15 British marines and sailors by the Iranian regime and its Revolutionary Guards; is distressed at the failure of the Government to take any meaningful punitive action against the Iranian regime; is extremely concerned at reports by Coalition commanders in Iraq that the Iranian regime is funding and arming outlawed militias responsible for deadly attacks on British troops and Iraqis; strongly urges the Government to take steps to counter the threat of Iranian-sponsored terrorism and fundamentalism in Iraq and the Middle East; calls on the Government to work rigorously at the UN Security Council to impose comprehensive sanctions, including an arms, diplomatic, technologic and oil embargo on Iran in the wake of the regime's continued nuclear defiance; censures widespread human rights abuses in Iran, in particular the regime's recent crackdown on women for mal-veiling; joins calls by other EU parliamentarians for restrictions to be lifted immediately from Iran's democratic opposition movement in line with the 12th December 2006 ruling by the Court of First Instance which annulled its terrorist listing; supports the recent student demonstrations in the Iranian city of Eghlid for greater social freedoms; strongly condemns the brutal crackdown on the protests, including the killing of several students by the Iranian regime's security forces; and urges the Government to lend greater support to the democratic aspirations of the Iranian people.
