Bullying And The Beatbullying Campaign
EDM number 1217 in 2006-07, proposed by Stephen Williams on 26/03/2007.
That this House notes that all bullying has serious effects on victims, resulting in the failure of pupils to achieve their full potential, truancy, self-harm and even suicide; further notes that over a third of children who are absent from school are missing lessons because of the fear of bullying; accepts the findings of the Education and Skills Select Committee's report that lack of accurate reliable data on bullying is a barrier to more effective anti-bullying work; is concerned that decisons on anti-bullying policy are being made with very little evidence to guide them, leading to money being wasted and children being left at risk; notes that Beatbullying run proven bullying prevention programmes year on year centred on peer activism; and supports their campaign for `4 quid a kid' which would pay for teachers, pupils, parents and governors to be equipped to manage bullying prevention in their communities to decrease the currently unacceptable levels of physical, psychological, racist, special educational needs-related, homophobic, cyber and faith-based bullying of young people in the UK.
