Recognition For The Achievements Of Jock Stein
EDM number 1096 in 2006-07, proposed by David Marshall on 12/03/2007.
That this House believes that the time is long overdue to honour properly the late Jock Stein for his achievements as a football manager with Dunfermline, Celtic and Scotland; notes that he led Celtic to victory in the 1967 European Cup Final in Lisbon, the first British team to win this trophy, and to narrow defeat in a second final; further notes that he led Celtic to tremendous domestic success after having led Dunfermline to a Scottish cup victory and into European competition; further notes that as Scotland Manager he restored national pride and took them into the 1982 World Cup finals; further notes that he sadly collapsed and died whilst managing them against Wales in 1985; and hopes that the petition submitted to Downing Street by Tom Shields of the Sunday Herald seeking a posthumous knighthood for Jock Stein will be approved and that he will receive the recognition his achievements deserve.
