YORKSHIRE POST'S ROAD TO RUIN CAMPAIGN

EDM number 909 in 2005-06, proposed by Greg Mulholland on 01/11/2005.

That this House welcomes the Yorkshire Post's Road to Ruin Campaign to get a fair deal for transport in the region; notes that experts have predicted that the region faces gridlock with the M1 and M62 among the UK's most crowded motorways, and that Government failure to back a supertram network for Leeds will lead to the loss of a staggering £2.4 billion of investment and up to 34,000 jobs; further notes that congestion is costing firms thousands of pounds, and could also affect the development of the Humber ports that handle 80 million tonnes of goods annually and upon which thousands of jobs depend; further notes that Yorkshire Forward, the regional development agency, has warned that Yorkshire's ability to compete nationally and internationally suffers because of congestion; and calls on the Government to redress the unfair North-South divide that has seen Yorkshire receive just 7.6 per cent. of the English transport budget compared to London which receives 33.4 per cent. according to research from the Passenger Transport Executive Group which represents the Passenger Transport Executives in metropolitan districts outside London.
