Right To Free Speech In Turkey
EDM number 844 in 2005-06, proposed by Martin Caton on 24/10/2005.
That this House acknowledges the significance of the academic conference held in Istanbul in September that opened up discussions in Turkey about what happened to the Ottoman Armenians; recognises the courage of Turkish scholars like Halil Berktay, Murat Belge and Taner Akcam in focusing on this part of Turkey's history and their integrity in researching and reporting it; and supports all those in Turkey working to remove any provisions in Turkish law, including the new Penal Code, that conflict with Turkey's constitutional guarantee of the right to free speech.
