Exotic Wild Bird Trade
EDM number 839 in 2005-06, proposed by Lindsay Hoyle on 24/10/2005.
That this House notes with concern the rise in the trade of exotic birds within the European Union (EU); recognises that despite the limit on the number of exotic birds which can be sold set by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, estimates indicate that over two million exotic wild birds are traded within the EU each year; further notes that half the birds transported from Africa and South America die from stress; and calls on the Government to work with EU member states to put an end to the black market trade and the unnecessary cruelty and death of thousands of exotic wild birds each year.
