Provision Of Fair Trial Guarantees In The Maldives
EDM number 838 in 2005-06, proposed by Gary Streeter on 24/10/2005.
That this House reiterates its support for democratic reform in the Maldives; is deeply concerned about the detention of Mohamed Nasheed, Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party, on charges of terrorism and treason; notes that Mohamed Nasheed was recognised as a political refugee by the British Government in April 2004 and voluntarily returned to the Maldives in May 2005; acknowledges assurances by the Government of Maldives that Mohamed Nasheed will be afforded a fair trial; observes that Sir Ivan Lawrence QC has highlighted the lack of judicial independence in the Maldives and has recommended the appointment of an expatriate judge through the Commonwealth Secretariat; and calls upon the UK Government urgently to facilitate the implementation of Sir Ivan's recommendations.
