Staff In The Cultural Heritage Sector
EDM number 831 in 2005-06, proposed by John McDonnell on 21/10/2005.
That this House notes the importance of the country's museums, galleries, heritage sites, historic palaces and parks; further notes the excellent work of staff within these institutions in educating and informing members of the public and tourists from across the world about cultural heritage; is concerned by the low pay these staff receive to preserve, publicise and secure these priceless buildings and artefacts; therefore calls on the Government to address the issue of grant funding to these institutions, in consultation with the recognised trade unions; and further calls on the Government to take action to prevent these institutions having to rely on the provision of shops and restaurants to maintain revenue, putting at risk the maintenance of historic buildings, collections, exhibitions and the valued associated jobs.
