BUYERS' CHARTER
EDM number 772 in 2005-06, proposed by Lindsay Hoyle on 17/10/2005.
That this House notes with disappointment the refusal of major supermarkets to work with the National Farmers Union (NFU) to sign up to a Buyers' Charter; recognises that the Buyers' Charter aims to formulate an agreement between food producers and buyers covering areas such as environment, labour and even price which will cover all suppliers, including processors, which most farmers deal with directly; supports the NFU in its belief that such a charter would help break the armlock the major supermarkets currently have over farmers; and urges supermarkets to work with the NFU in order to establish a mutually beneficial relationship where both the supplier and purchaser get a fair deal, making their commitment to British farming clear by entering into such an agreement.
