HARRY POTTER AND ENCOURAGING CHILDREN'S READING

EDM number 603 in 2005-06, proposed by Jo Swinson on 18/07/2005.

That this House welcomes the launch of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and the excitement and enthusiasm for reading the series has sparked among children; praises J K Rowling for capturing the imagination of children and adults alike with her magical storytelling; notes the new research by the Federation of Children's Book Groups which found that 59 per cent. of children think that Harry Potter books have helped them to improve their reading skills and that 67 per cent. of teachers say that Harry Potter has helped turn non-readers into readers; and recommends this book to honourable Members in search of an entertaining read for their holiday.
