RICKSHAWS AND LONDON'S STATUS AS A WORLD CLASS CITY

EDM number 583 in 2005-06, proposed by Lee Scott on 13/07/2005.

That this House notes with dismay the increasing number of pedicabs or rickshaws on the streets of London; believes that passengers in pedicabs risk serious injury, since the construction and maintenance standards of pedicabs are unchecked and unregulated, and their riders often inexperienced about London's streets and traffic; further notes that pedicab fares are unregulated and are up to five times more than London taxi prices; records its concern, in light of the recent conviction of a pedicab rider for rape of a passenger, that pedicab riders are not subject to vetting, unlike taxi drivers; and believes that, far from being a colourful addition to the streetscape in our capital, pedicabs are a dangerous and expensive transport mode unneeded in a world class city.
