Nuclear Waste Sites
EDM number 465 in 2005-06, proposed by Paul Flynn on 29/06/2005.
That this House notes that on 10th June, NIREX, the nuclear waste management and disposal executive body, issued a list drawn up by its consultants of 537 sites across the country deemed potentially geologically suitable to locate a nuclear waste disposal repository; believes that the timing of this release of information, welcome as it is, nevertheless means that local authorities which have only just learned of their existence on the NIREX list will not have sufficient time to consider the implications of their nomination for the communities they represent; and therefore calls upon the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to postpone for three months the deadline of 27th June set by the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management several months prior to the release of the list, for responses to be submitted to its current second stage public consultation on radioactive waste management options.
