Illegal Logging
EDM number 405 in 2005-06, proposed by Joan Walley on 27/06/2005.
That this House notes that the Government has repeatedly stated its commitment to tackling the problem of illegal logging and that illegal logging has been recognised as costing producer countries as much as 10 to 15 billion euros per year in lost revenues; further notes that it undermines the objectives set by the Government to implement economic growth and good governance through the Commission for Africa, that it causes widespread environmental damage and loss of biodiversity, that large amounts of illegally logged materials continue to be traded into the UK; and that the European Commission has failed to act sufficiently to address this emergency; and urges the Government to introduce legislation that will prohibit illegally logged timber from entering or being available for sale in the UK.
