Democracy In The Maldives
EDM number 2919 in 2005-06, proposed by Gary Streeter on 07/11/2006.
That this House welcomes the democratic reforms slowly taking place in the Maldives; expresses concerns over the lack of independence of the Judiciary in the Maldives and the excessive use of arbitrary arrest and courts as political tools by the Maldives government; notes that opposition leader Mohamed Nasheed and human rights activist Jennifer Latheef still have charges pending upon them despite their recent release from detention; observes that in view of the peaceful demonstration scheduled for 10th November 2006 calling for the new constitutions to be amended, members of the opposition are once again being arbitrarily detained; and calls upon the UK Government respectfully to caution the Maldives government to act with restraint during the up-coming popular demonstrations and to drop politically motivated charges against members of the political opposition.
