Tainted Blood Campaign
EDM number 2637 in 2005-06, proposed by Pete Wishart on 24/07/2006.
That this House supports the campaign from taintedblood to secure a full, independent public inquiry into contaminated blood, and to provide proper compensation to those people who have fallen victim to HIV and hepatitis C through contaminated blood products; notes that in the late 1970s and early 1980s, 4,800 British haemophiliacs and many more others were infected with hepatitis C through their NHS treatment, with 1,200 of those also infected with HIV; further notes that more than 800 people have already died from AIDS with hundreds more having died from hepatitis C; further notes that against overwhelming evidence, no fault has ever been admitted by either the Government or the pharmaceutical companies who supplied the contaminated blood products; further notes that those living with these horrendous infections, and their loved ones who have themselves become infected, still have no answers; and calls on the Government to respond positively to this campaign so that justice can at last be secured on this issue.
