Britain In Bloom In Shrewsbury And The Highways Agency

EDM number 2404 in 2005-06, proposed by Daniel Kawczynski on 20/06/2006.

That this House applauds the hard work and dedication of Shrewsbury's Britain in Bloom Committee whose efforts bring great pleasure to Shrewsbury residents and visitors alike; notes that the failure of the Highways Agency in Birmingham to tidy Shrewsbury's trunk traffic islands prevents maintenance of the standard necessary for the competition; further notes that the islands managed by Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council are sponsored and attractive, and that those managed by the Highways Agency are a disgrace; applauds the valiant attempts by Derek Caddy of Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough to persuade the Highways Agency to maintain traffic islands to a better standard; regrets that nothing has been done in response to his efforts and that despite failing to maintain their areas the Highways Agency have not given consent for others to do so; and urges the Highways Agency to take steps to maximise Shrewsbury's chances in the competition by fulfilling its obligation to undertake the work to traffic islands for which it is responsible.
