John Torney

EDM number 2333 in 2005-06, proposed by Mark Durkan on 08/06/2006.

That this House doubts the soundness of the conviction of John Torney, found guilty of murdering his wife and two children in 1994; further notes that Mr Torney maintained his innocence right up until his death in prison in June 2005; recognises that evidence has come to light that was not made available at the trial which casts considerable doubt upon the conviction; further recognises that the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland and the Police Service of Northern Ireland have not fully investigated all aspects of this new evidence; is concerned at the lack of progress by the CCRC in complying with the Order of the Divisional Court in the High Court of Justice in Northern Ireland made on 22nd June 2005 directing the CCRC to take all steps necessary to identify a crucial witness; and considers that it is now time for a complete and thorough review of all aspects of the case by the CCRC with a view to its referral to the Court of Appeal.

This motion has been signed by a total of 15 MPs.
