Darfur Asylum Seekers
EDM number 2279 in 2005-06, proposed by Clare Short on 05/06/2006.
That this House believes that in present circumstances it is unsafe forcibly to return Africans from the Darfur region of Sudan back to their country of origin, particularly as the only legitimate way of returning to Sudan is through Khartoum International Airport which is likely to place returnees in the hands of the Sudanese National Security and Intelligence Service; notes that returns conducted from the United Kingdom increase the likelihood of arbitrary detention and torture; and further notes that those displaced from the crisis in Darfur and resident in the Khartoum region are likely to be identified, harassed and displaced on the basis of their ethnicity as demonstrated in the Aegis Trust report of June 2006 `Safe as Ghost Houses - Prospects for Darfur African Survivors removed to Khartoum'.
