20th Anniversary Of The Chernobyl Disaster

EDM number 1971 in 2005-06, proposed by Nigel Evans on 18/04/2006.

That this House notes with sadness the 20th Anniversary of the Chernobyl Disaster on 26th April; further notes that 30 people lost their lives immediately and that as a result of the radiation in a 20-mile radius 135,000 people had to be evacuated; agrees that overcoming the consequences of the Chernobyl accident is a challenge that demands consistent efforts of the world community; recognises that the transformation of the shelter over the Chernobyl Power Plant into an ecologically safe system should remain a key priority for the G7; further notes with appreciation the contributions of all donors made to achieve this goal and that such transformation would be a landmark event in overcoming this man-made-accident; welcomes the assistance of numerous UK charities which is very much appreciated in the Ukraine; and highlights the importance of this continuing support since the consequences of the accident still affect many families.
