Preventing Diabetes In Children

EDM number 1969 in 2005-06, proposed by Keith Vaz on 18/04/2006.

That this House notes with concern the study by the University of Leicester which found physical inactivity in increasing numbers of children is putting them at serious risk of developing diabetes; is concerned by the increasing number of children suffering Type-2 diabetes, a condition which was previously thought only to affect those over the age of 40; further notes that at least 36,000 people in the United Kingdom suffer from diabetes, including 1,000 children, and that another 30,000 people may have the condition undiagnosed; and calls on schools and local authorities to encourage children to take part in, and to enjoy, sport and to discourage parents where appropriate from driving their children to school.

This motion has been signed by a total of 69 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
