Risk Of Coronary Heart Disease, Stroke And Diabetes
EDM number 1752 in 2005-06, proposed by Clare Short on 06/03/2006.
That this House recognises that a growing proportion of the adult population in the UK is obese with associated additional medical complications including an increased risk of developing type II diabetes and coronary heart disease; notes that those of Asian background have a higher premature death rate from coronary heart disease and stroke and are up to six times more likely to develop diabetes and that 20 per cent. of the South Asian community in the UK has type II diabetes in contrast to three per cent. of the general population; understands that in addition to genetics, lifestyle choices are also known to increase risk factors; congratulates local initiatives such as the Apnee Sehat initiative led by South Warwickshire Primary Care Trust which has developed an educational DVD supported by Warwick University and the Department of Health; commends such educational resources being tailored to raise health risk awareness in South Asian communities and to promote lifestyle changes to prevent these diseases; and urges the Department of Health to use this beacon DVD as a best practice tool for other health awareness projects targeting this community across the UK.
