Earby Youth Hostel And The Independent Labour Party
EDM number 1674 in 2005-06, proposed by Gordon Prentice on 16/02/2006.
That this House deeply regrets the threatened sale of the youth hostel in Birch Hall Lane, Earby, which has been singled out for closure as part of the Youth Hostels Association's (YHA) new strategy to re-focus its work; notes that the hostel has huge significance for those interested in the history of the Labour Movement as it was once the home of Katherine Bruce Glasier, one of the founders of the Independent Labour Party (ILP) and the only woman on the first administrative council of the ILP; further notes that the building came into the hands of the YHA in the 1950s and that it was comprehensively modernised as recently as 1997 when the hon. Member for Pendle was invited to re-open the hostel; recognises that the hostel lies in a delightful setting in one of the undiscovered corners of rural England; and urges the YHA to reconsider its decision.
