Rail Services From Yorkshire And The North East
EDM number 1556 in 2005-06, proposed by John Grogan on 01/02/2006.
That this House urges the Department for Transport, Network Rail and the Office of the Rail Regulator to develop a joined-up approach to improve rail services to Yorkshire and the North East; supports plans from the Great North Eastern Railway to increase the number of services between London and Leeds from 53 to 65 a day; further supports proposals from Grand Central to operate services to the capital from Sunderland, Hartlepool, Eaglescliffe, near Middlesbrough, Thirsk, Bradford, Halifax, Brighouse and Pontefract, none of which currently has a direct service to the capital; backs the ambitions of Hull Trains to increase the number of services between Hull and London; recognises that all these plans will require extra capacity on the East Coast Main Line (ECML); requests the three rail companies on the ECML to join together to lobby for extra capacity on the line; notes that only 35 per cent. of the capacity allocated to freight on the ECML is currently taken up; and therefore calls on the Department for Transport and Network Rail to bring forward the implementation of the ECML Route Utilisation Strategy from December 2007 to December 2006 and to ensure that there is sufficient extra capacity for passenger services.
