Tobacco Duty Revenue Receipts

EDM number 144 in 2005-06, proposed by Laurence Robertson on 19/05/2005.

That this House notes that the Government's estimate that the cost to the NHS of treating people with smoking related diseases is £1.7 billion; further notes that the amount collected by the Exchequer in tobacco duty revenue in 2003-04 was £8.1 billion; and calls upon the Government to explain how it will make up the lost revenue from tobacco sales, and subsequently lost alcohol sales, if a ban on smoking in pubs is introduced.
