NEW YEAR'S HONOURS AWARDS
EDM number 1324 in 2005-06, proposed by Jim Sheridan on 09/01/2006.
That this House recognises the significant achievements of both the English cricket team in winning the Ashes and the British Olympic bid team in securing the 2012 games for London; disagrees that those involved should be honoured for these one-off achievements as all of those named are already being well rewarded financially thereby creating a public perception of establishment cronyism which does nothing to enhance the already fragile reputation of the honours system; and calls on the decision-makers to clarify the criteria for awarding these honours in order that the general public and the thousands of unpaid volunteers who genuinely make a difference to people's everyday lives can make an informed judgement about their validity.
