Sustainable Fishing And Supermarkets
EDM number 1163 in 2005-06, proposed by Alan Simpson on 30/11/2005.
That this House welcomes the Greenpeace Report `A Recipe for Disaster' outlining the role of UK supermarkets in the drive for sustainable fishing practices; notes that 90 per cent. of UK fish products are purchased through supermarkets; further notes the Greenpeace supermarket league table on fish procurement standards, commendably led by Marks and Spencer; urges all UK supermarkets to adopt similar sustainable procurement policies to improve fishing methods for the long-term benefit of the marine environment and for fishing communities here and overseas; calls upon the House of Commons Commission actively to support this campaign through the adoption of a fully sustainable seafood procurement policy in all House of Commons food outlets; recognises the leadership role of Parliament in highlighting the considerable threats faced by the marine environment today and the endangered state of many popular fish species; and calls on the Government as a matter of urgency to take effective action here and in Europe to safeguard the future of the seas.
