One Pound Levy For Air Passengers
EDM number 1101 in 2005-06, proposed by Tom Brake on 23/11/2005.
That this House expresses regret at the Government's decision not to implement a £1 levy on all passengers flying out of the UK to provide passenger security against airlines going bankrupt as recommended by the Civil Aviation Authority; notes that ABTA, Virgin, Which? and the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Consumer Affairs and Trading Standards have also expressed concern at the Government's failure to act; further notes that under present arrangements around 84 million passengers currently fly without adequate insurance; further notes that, if an airline were to go bankrupt, UK consumers could be stranded abroad; and calls on the Government to reverse this decision at the earliest possible opportunity and legislate to address this issue.
