Housebuilding And Local Democracy
EDM number 1100 in 2005-06, proposed by Jeremy Hunt on 23/11/2005.
That this House notes that the Government's building plans seriously threaten the character of the towns and countryside in the South East whilst doing little to help young people get on to the housing ladder; notes that the current proposals are likely to lead to unacceptable overdevelopment in the South East, further straining local services in an area already suffering from a substantial infrastructure deficit; urges the Government to review the remit of the Planning Inspectorate to ensure it gives a higher priority to local objections to planning proposals; and further calls on the Government to devolve the final decision on both planning applications and development policy to elected local authorities rather than the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister or regional assemblies.
