Headquarters Of The Commission For Equalities And Human Rights

EDM number 1032 in 2005-06, proposed by Jim Dobbin on 15/11/2005.

That this House notes that the Government is about to decide on the location of the headquarters of the new Commission for Equalities and Human Rights (CEHR); further notes that Manchester already hosts the headquarters of the Equal Opportunities Commission and the Disability Rights Commission; recognises that the decision is of such great importance to the North West, and to Manchester, that the North West Regional Assembly, the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities and Manchester City Council as well as the Northwest Development Agency, the Manchester Evening News and Manchester Inward Investment Agency (MIDAS) are working together to promote Manchester as the location of choice for strong technical reasons and compelling cultural and political arguments; further recognises that the BBC, and many other organisations, are relocating to the heart of what is an ambitious, attractive and successful city region; believes the potential to build on the vibrancy and diversity within the city region and the North West as a whole, where the first regional equality and diversity strategy was launched last year, should be seized at a time when so much other strategic investment is being made in the South; and calls on the Government to give Manchester and the North West the recognition it deserves and decide to have the CEHR headquarters in Manchester.

This motion has been signed by a total of 20 MPs.
