Crossrail Station At Woolwich

EDM number 880 in 2004-05, proposed by Clive Efford on 09/03/2005.

That this House expresses its disappointment that the current Crossrail plans do not include a station at Woolwich; regrets that no feasibility study to assess the cost against the potential benefits of a station at Woolwich has been carried out; recognises that Woolwich is served by many public transport services and will soon be linked to the Docklands Light Railway; considers these proposals to be a failure to recognise the strategic potential of Woolwich as a major transport hub in south east London; welcomes the introduction of Crossrail at Abbey Wood but is dismayed that many thousands of people from south east London will find it difficult to access this station by public transport; notes that the original proposals for the Jubilee Line did not include a station at Greenwich North and that the Docklands Light Rail scheme did not have a station at Cutty Sark Gardens until demands from local people and Greenwich Council forced the planners to consider the needs of people south of the river; further notes that these stations are now well used integral parts of the transport network; and calls on the Government to carry out an analysis of the transport needs of south east London taking into consideration the disadvantages posed by the fact that it is served by only one London Underground station and the need to increase public transport options to tackle the growing problem of traffic pollution.
