Heart Of Midlothian Memorial
EDM number 310 in 2004-05, proposed by George Foulkes on 06/12/2004.
That this House welcomes the unveiling of a Hearts of Midlothian Memorial to honour those players who gave their lives in the Battle of the Somme in the French village of Contalmaison; acknowledges the sacrifice of those players, Duncan Currie, John Allan, Thomas Gracie, James Speedle, James Boyd, Ernest Ellis, and Harry Wattle, who perished in the battle as well as the 11 other players who were wounded or gassed; recognises that their courageous acts of patriotism moved others to enlist in the fight as well; commends Jack Alexander, whose book, McCrae's Battalion, led directly to the establishment of the memorial; and welcomes the support of the Scottish Executive, the City of Edinburgh Council, Heart of Midlothian FC and other clubs such as Hibernian FC for this fitting tribute.
