Democracy In Burma
EDM number 996 in 2003-04, proposed by Iain Luke on 20/04/2004.
That this House calls on the Government to urge Burma's military rulers to release immediately Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the Central Executive Committee of her party, the National League for Democracy so that a genuine dialogue might begin between the National League for Democracy, the military and representatives of Burma's ethnic nationalities; urges the Government to do all it can to ensure that Burma does not become part of the Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM) in the event of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's release, which would not indicate any progress in the human rights situation in the country nor amount to a sign of genuine political reform; and believes that to reward Burma's military by granting them membership of ASEM for this reason, would be premature when Burma will be in no better position that it was one year ago, before the massacre of Aung San Suu Kyi's supporters and her renewed detention.
