Emmaus Projects

That this House welcomes the research undertaken at Cambridge University into Emmaus communities and their effective work in support of the homeless community in this country; recognises the work they carry out worldwide in over 50 countries; notes that Emmaus projects not only provide a valuable haven but are productive businesses in their own rights; congratulates the Emmaus project in Cambridge for generating a trading surplus of ú153,750 from its business activities in the financial year 2001-02; acknowledges that savings to the Government and the wider community are in the order of ú600,000 per annum; and supports the project's expansion throughout the United Kingdom.
